Installing wonder board over existing drywall?

I would like to know the process for installing wonder board over existing drywall for a bathtub surround. Wonderboard instructions reflect going all the way down to the studs. and using the 1/2 inch product. I'd like to use the 1/4 inch.I'll be installing marble tiles. Has anyone done anything similar? Thanks.
