How do you get a gradient effect with ombre hair?

i tried to ombre my hair but only did one strand to test it. it turned out good but the thing is i can't get it to fade into the rest of my hair if you know what i mean. the blonde part is just a straight across line instead of it being a gradient fade. how can i get the fading effect?
