I have a 5 hour layover in Rome what can I see in that time?

How far are the monuments in Rome from the airport (Fiumicino)? I was thinking the spanish steps or the colosseum. What is my best bet? I would like to get off the plane hop in a cab to take a couple pictures somewhere, possibly grab a quick bite. Is that possible to do and make it back on my flight?
