How do I be a good stepmom??

My husband has a 5 year old daughter that I barely know. She and I get along fine but I want to get closer to her. I don't have any children of my own so that maternal instinct hasn't kicked in yet. What can I do to form a strong bond with her without trying to take her mother's place?
