Why don't light photons/waves, loose image shape information?

Consider a digital photograph: Each pixel is just a dot of color there is absolutely no shape information contained in the pixel. All the shape information is in the pattern of the dots. Each photon is a dot. Really. If the photons are directed at a sensor that uses the Photoelectric Effect all you get is a dot where each photon impacts.
